Oh, Mr. Sun

One of the songs we have been singing a lot lately during group time is Oh, Mr. Sun! We had forgotten about this classic song until Amy sang it the other day. We also loved her sun props so we made some of our own. We like incorporating props into songs as it allows all of our kiddos to participate.

Here are the lyrics if you would like to sing at home:

Oh Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr. Golden Sun
Please shine down on me

Oh Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr, Golden Sun
Hiding behind the tree

Oh these little children are asking you
To please come out so they can play with you

Oh Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr.  Golden Sun
Please shine down on
Please shine down on
Please shine down on me!

Taking Gym Outside!

We took advantage of the beautiful spring weather this week and took our gym groups outside!  We created a modified hopscotch and had the kids work on their jumping skills. A few even tried jumping from square to square on one leg. We also practiced throwing bean bags into the hula hoops. And then we played some groups games!

Music Time with Amy

Today during music, we sang some classics:

Zoom, Zoom, Zoom
Zoom, Zoom, Zoom
(rub hands together, back and forth while pointing them up in the air)
We’re going to the moon.
Zoom, Zoom, Zoom
We’re going to the moon.
If you want to take a trip,
Climb aboard my rocket ship.
Zoom, Zoom, Zoom
We’re going to the moon.
5, 4, 3, 2, 1,
(hold 5 fingers up and count down)
Blast off!
(toss child up gently in the air or the child can jump up on their own)

Roly Poly

Roly poly, roly poly
Up, up, up...up, up, up
(roll hands around each other, then move hands up and up and up)

Roly poly poly, roly poly poly
Down, down, down...down, down, down
(roll hands, then move hands down and down and down)

We also sang some new spring inspired songs. There were lots of smiles, giggles, singing and dancing happening!  One of the favorites was the chicken dance, especially the part where they got to dance with a peer.

Rain and Clouds

Today during craft time, we read some books about rain and talked about what you wear in the rain.

Then we did some experiments!

Rain experiment: First we filled up a glass with water and then we put shaving cream on top (the shaving cream was the clouds), then we dropped in blue food colouring and waited. All of a sudden it started to rain!

Cloud Experiment: For this one, we unwrapped a bar of IVORY soap, placed it on a plate and put it in the microwave for 90 seconds. We watched it grow into a big cloud. Once it cooled down we took it out and played with it.

Lastly, we made our umbrella crafts! First we cut out the tops of the umbrella, then we decorated them with stickers, bingo dabbers, and crayons. Then we glued a popsicle stick to the back.

Happy Friday!

Check out some of the fun stuff we have been up to this week!

The colour this month is PINK! The kids got creative and painted with feathers using different shades of pink paint. This was a huge success, the kids loved using the feathers and made some really unique artwork.

"Tap the Magic Tree" by Christie Matheson is a fun and interactive book that we read during group this week. The book allows the kids to help one lonely tree change with the seasons!

Letter Time this week was all about the extraordinary letter X. The kids had an opportunity to go on a treasure hunt, read the book "Fox in Socks" by Dr. Seuss, look at a variety of items that started or ended with the letter x and make a xylophone craft!

The big highlight of the week for most kids has been the swimming outing! Our last group goes this afternoon. The pool has been busier than normal but everyone has been coping well! Most of the kids have been enjoying splashing in the waves and trying out the water slides. While others have been spending their time in the warm kiddie pool playing with water toys.

Hello Spring!

Welcome back! Hopefully everyone had a great spring break and has been enjoying the nice weather while it lasts. Our theme this month is Spring! Check out the fun things we have going on in our classrooms:

In the Rainbow room, the kids have an opportunity to dress up in rain coats and rain boots and jump in "puddles"! The Easter nest as been quite the hit, in particular the bubble wrap that is at the bottom. We also have hidden Easter eggs around the classrooms so kids can go on an Easter egg hunt.

The Sunroom is our Bug Room. Some of the activities include: making a bug house out of lego, pretending to be bugs and crawling through a maze, playing a bug inspired twister game and going on a picnic!

In the Tree Room, you will find a little flower shop where the kids can "plant" flowers as well as pretend to buy or sell them. There is also a gardening inspired tactile table and a spring cleaning area where the kids are able to vacuum and sweep or draw on the window with window crayons and then wipe it off with water and a cloth.
